Update, November 3, 2026: Rockstar has now put a figure on the record. Its Newswire post says the pre-load "will require up to 212 GB depending on your device", and digital pre-loading opens on November 10 rather than November 12. The 210GB report below was close, and is now superseded by the official number. Our story on the November 10 pre-load has the detail. The original article follows as published.
GTA 6 will reportedly need a 210GB download on PlayStation 5. The figure surfaced on October 27, 2026, from PlayStation Game Size, an account on X that reads data from the PlayStation Store's backend before it shows up on public store pages. Insider Gaming says it has corroborated the number, and GamesRadar, GameSpot, Polygon and Engadget have all run it the same day.
What matters most here is that the figure comes from store data, not from Rockstar or Sony. Neither company has put a download size on the record, and the public PlayStation Store listing doesn't show one yet. Treat 210GB as a strong, specific report, not a confirmed spec.
What's Confirmed
These are the parts Rockstar has already said on the record, and they frame the size report:
- Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- Preloading opens at local midnight on November 12, 2026, according to Rockstar Support, based on the region of your store account rather than your console clock.
- The physical edition is a box with a download code. Rockstar Support says a disc will not be included, so physical buyers face the same download as everyone else.
- The PlayStation Store lists the game as PS5 Pro Enhanced.
That last point about the physical box is the one that turns a download size into a practical problem. Nobody gets to skip the install by buying a box at a shop.
What's Being Reported
According to the PlayStation Game Size post, as described by PlayStation LifeStyle and Engadget:
- The PS5 download is 210GB.
- The entry it comes from lists the Standard edition at $79.99, matching the price Rockstar has already set.
- The same data shows preloading on November 12 and release on November 19, with an unlock time of midnight. Those two dates line up with what Rockstar has said, which is part of why outlets are taking the size seriously.
Insider Gaming says it independently corroborated the 210GB figure. Engadget, citing IGN, points out that Red Dead Redemption 2 needed 149GB of free space on PS4 in 2018, so GTA 6 would land about 61GB above Rockstar's previous open world.
What We Still Don't Know
Several pieces are missing, and they could change the number you actually need to free up:
- Download versus install. It isn't clear whether 210GB is the size of the download or the space the game takes once installed. Consoles often need extra working room during installation.
- Day-one patch. Insider Gaming expects a launch-day update. Any patch on November 19 adds to the total, and Rockstar games historically grow after launch.
- Xbox Series X|S. No size has been reported for Xbox yet.
- Ultimate Edition. The reported figure is tied to the Standard edition entry. Whether the extra Ultimate Edition content changes the size hasn't been reported.
How to Prepare Before November 12
Even if the final number moves, 210GB gives you a sensible planning target. A standard PS5 has roughly 667GB of usable space, so GTA 6 alone would take close to a third of it. Add a couple of large shooters and you can run out fast.
Xbox Series S owners on the 512GB model have the hardest time. That console has roughly 360GB of usable space, and a 210GB game would use more than half of it before any other game is installed. A storage expansion card is the clean fix; an external USB drive can store games but can't run current-generation titles from it.
Our advice is to clear space now rather than on preload night, when everyone else will be downloading at the same time. Aim for comfortably more than 210GB free so a day-one patch doesn't stop you on launch morning. Our earlier storage guide has the per-console breakdown, and we'll update it once Rockstar or a store listing puts an official figure on the record.
What to Watch Next
The number most likely to settle this is the public PlayStation Store or Xbox Store listing, which usually shows a size closer to preload. Rockstar Support may also publish install requirements before November 12. Until one of those appears, 210GB stays in the reported column on The GTA Zone, and we'll say so the moment it moves.
