Rockstar Games' UK workers will vote on whether to recognise a trade union from November 12 to November 26, 2026, according to a press release from the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB) reported on October 27 by Kotaku and Game Developer. The two-week ballot runs straight through the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19.

The source for the dates is the union, not Rockstar. Rockstar has not issued a public statement about the vote, and nothing in today's reports describes the ballot method or how many staff are eligible. We've kept what the union says and what is already on the record in separate sections below.

What the Union Says

According to the IWGB press release, as reported by Kotaku and Game Developer:

  • UK-based Rockstar staff will vote yes or no on recognising the IWGB Rockstar Game Workers Union, between November 12 and November 26.
  • Union members have been meeting Rockstar management since July to work toward a recognition deal.
  • Workers had asked Rockstar to recognise the union voluntarily before GTA 6 launched. That didn't happen, so it has gone to a vote.
  • A recognition deal would give members a collective say on pay and bonuses, overtime, redundancies, flexible working and policies on generative AI.
  • If the vote succeeds, the union says it would be the largest recognised trade union in the UK games industry.

Game Developer quotes an unnamed union committee member saying workers have a chance to make gaming history twice over, and cites union concerns about the gender pay gap, inconsistent overtime policies and job security after release. Those are the union's positions, not established findings.

What's Already on the Record

The vote follows a recognition request that was public from the start. Rockstar workers asked for voluntary recognition of the IWGB union on June 30, 2026, and Rockstar acknowledged receiving it and said it intended to meet the group for open dialogue with all stakeholders. Today's reports suggest those talks continued through the summer without producing a deal.

The backdrop is the dismissal of 31 union members in the UK in October 2025. Rockstar's stated position, repeated in today's coverage, is that they were dismissed for "gross misconduct, and for no other reason", and the company has said the dismissals related to sharing confidential information in an external channel. The IWGB says the firings were union-busting. Rockstar has called claims linking the dismissals to union activity false.

Where the Tribunal Stands

That dispute is still before a UK employment tribunal. Kotaku and Game Developer both report that closing submissions are expected on November 17 and 18, the two days before GTA 6 launches. That's later than the timetable we reported earlier this year, which had the full hearing wrapping in mid-October; we've updated our facts sheet accordingly.

Recent hearings have included claims made in testimony about an informant in the union's Discord server. Those are allegations raised in cross-examination, not findings of the tribunal, and no judgment has been issued. Game Developer notes the recognition vote runs independently of the tribunal.

Why It Matters for GTA 6

Nothing here changes the game itself. Rockstar has said repeatedly that GTA 6 ships on November 19, and preloading opens on November 12, the same day the ballot opens. What the overlap does is put Rockstar's labour story in the same headlines as the biggest launch in its history, at the moment the company has the most attention on it.

It also matters for the wider UK industry. The union's own claim is that a yes vote would create the largest recognised union in British games, which is why other studios and workers are likely to watch the result closely.

What to Watch Next

  • The ballot opens November 12 and closes November 26. Expect the IWGB to announce a result soon after.
  • Tribunal closing submissions are expected November 17–18, with a judgment to follow at a later date.
  • Any statement from Rockstar on the vote. We'll add it here as soon as one is on the record.
