If you have spent years and real money building a GTA Online character, the question of whether any of it survives the jump to GTA 6 matters more than most of the launch coverage. The answer, as of October 26, 2026, is short and unsatisfying: Rockstar has said nothing, and there is nothing yet to carry over to.
What Rockstar has actually said
Nothing about multiplayer. Every official showing of GTA 6, from Trailer 1 in December 2023 through the Extended Look in August and the launch trailer this month, has been the single-player story of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Rockstar has not announced an online mode, a GTA Online successor, a date for either, or any plan to migrate characters, GTA$, levels or unlocks from GTA Online into the new game.
That is not an oversight in our reporting; it is the state of play. Take-Two's Strauss Zelnick has talked about the August showcase being one of several reveals still to come, so an announcement before or after launch is possible. But today, asking whether progress carries over is asking about a mode that does not officially exist.
What the past tells you
Rockstar has moved GTA Online progress between platforms before, which is why the question is reasonable. When GTA V arrived on PS4 and Xbox One in 2014, players could transfer their GTA Online characters from PS3 and Xbox 360 in a one-time migration that Rockstar eventually closed in 2017. When the PS5 and Xbox Series versions launched in March 2022, there was another one-time migration from the previous generation.
Both of those were the same game moving to new hardware. GTA 6 is a new game with a new map, new characters and, presumably, a new economy. There is no precedent in the series for carrying one GTA's online progress into the next: nothing moved from GTA IV's multiplayer into GTA Online in 2013. If Rockstar does build a transfer, it would be a first.
The one official link between your account and GTA 6
There is exactly one confirmed connection, and it is small. The US PlayStation Store and Xbox Store listings state that pre-ordering GTA 6 includes one month of GTA+, Rockstar's subscription for GTA Online. That tells you Rockstar still sees GTA Online as a live product on launch day, and it is a reasonable hint that the service is not being switched off the day the new game arrives. It is not a hint about transfers.
Worth knowing alongside it: GTA V is leaving the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog on November 17, two days before GTA 6, along with Red Dead Redemption 2. If you play GTA Online through a PS Plus subscription rather than owning the game, your access ends then unless you buy it. Your character is tied to your Rockstar Games account, so buying the game later restores it.
What to do before November 19
- Do not spend GTA$ or Shark Card money on the assumption that any of it moves. Nothing has been announced, and the series' history says it will not.
- Keep your Rockstar Games Social Club account in good order. Every transfer Rockstar has ever run has gone through it, and the GTA+ bonus for pre-orders is tied to it.
- If you rely on the PS Plus catalog copy of GTA V, decide before November 17 whether to buy the game outright.
- Treat any post claiming GTA 6 Online launches on a specific date, with or without your old character, as unverified. The current circulating version, that it arrives alongside a PC release in early 2027, comes from a single low-trust source and sits on our Rumor Tracker as such.
What would change this
An announcement on the Rockstar Newswire is the only thing that will. When Rockstar details GTA 6's multiplayer, if it does, the transfer question will be answered in the same breath, and we will update this page within the day. Until then the honest headline is the one at the top: nothing carries over, because there is nothing to carry it to.
