Rockstar Games has, for the first time, explained the two GTA 6 delays in its own words. On October 14, 2026, Bloomberg Businessweek published a long feature by Jason Schreier on the making of Grand Theft Auto VI, built on interviews with Rockstar North's heads of development Rob Nelson, Aaron Garbut and Phil Hooker, head of publishing Jennifer Kolbe and technology lead Jonathon Ashcroft.
Bloomberg's article sits behind a paywall. The quotes below are as reported by Kotaku, GamesRadar, GamingBolt, GTAVice.net and Portal GTA 6, all of which read the piece. Where Rockstar staff are quoted by name, we treat it as on the record. Where an outlet summarises, we say so.
Why GTA 6 Slipped Twice
GTA 6 was announced in December 2023 for 2025. It then moved to May 26, 2026, and finally to November 19, 2026, the date Rockstar still holds. According to the feature, there was no single crisis behind either move. The game simply had too many moving parts that were not coming together as fast as the studio hoped.
Nelson described the pressure to Bloomberg directly: "You feel a huge pressure and obligation to deliver the highest-quality game in the most aggressive time scale that you can. And then you keep evaluating it as you go. And then you have to decide when you get within striking distance of that if it is actually achievable."
Hooker, per the outlets that read the piece, said the team could have hit the original schedule, but it would not have been the game they wanted to make.
The human detail everyone picked up is how Take-Two found out. Kolbe phoned chief executive Strauss Zelnick both times to ask for more time. She recalled his reaction to the second request: "You're kidding. Please tell me you're kidding." Kolbe added that once the team talked him through the reasons, "he got it," and said Rockstar was lucky to have a parent company that did not simply demand the game ship.
Still Changing a Month Out
Hooker also made a point that GamesRadar highlighted on October 16, drawn from Schreier's own video follow-up to the report. "The game is never completely settled," he said. "We never have an exact blueprint. Even within the last few months, we've changed things."
That is normal for a project of this size, and it does not mean the date is in doubt. Nelson has separately said the game will ship on time, and nothing in the Bloomberg piece suggests otherwise.
What Else Rockstar Put on the Record
- The project started as Project Americas. The first research trip to Miami was in 2015, and early plans covered parts of North and South America before the scope narrowed to Vice City and Leonida.
- Full production began after Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped in 2018, when most of the company moved onto one game.
- The skeleton of Jason and Lucia's story was in place by late 2019. Nelson described a "dark period" before the overall vision was clear, made harder by the pandemic.
- Headcount grew from 2,441 people in 2018 to 4,711 across 12 offices by August 2026. A new Los Angeles operation of writers, producers and directors was set up to handle the sheer number of characters the world needed.
- Kolbe said the leadership committed to not finishing the game through crunch, while acknowledging some crunch still happened.
- Rockstar did not disclose a budget, and Kolbe rejected the widely repeated claim that the game cost more than $1.5 billion.
Jason and Lucia Outside Missions
Bloomberg also described what it saw of the game running. In one example, the player, as Jason, texts Lucia to meet. The two walk in a park, visit a gym together, then rob a convenience store while still bantering. Hooker described a separate test session in which a fender bender spiralled into a robbery, a police chase and a fence for stolen goods, eating two hours without touching the story mission he set out to play.
These are Bloomberg's descriptions of a hands-off demo, not a feature list. We log them as reported detail rather than confirmed mechanics until Rockstar shows them itself.
What Comes After GTA 6
Hooker and Garbut told Bloomberg that the engine, tools and team built for this game will carry into the next one, and that Rockstar does not intend to tear that foundation down. The implication, as several outlets put it, is that the next project should not take eight years. No next game has been announced and no date was given. A Reddit thread claiming Rockstar "announced" a faster next game is a stretch of this comment, and it sits on our Rumor Tracker as such.
What to Watch Next
The release date is unchanged at November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with preload opening at local midnight on November 12. The Bloomberg feature is the fullest account of the game's development so far, and we will update this story if Rockstar publishes any of it on the Newswire or if the full interviews surface in other outlets.
