Grand Theft Auto VI will be eligible for The Game Awards 2026. The show's official FAQ, updated for this year's ceremony and read on October 15, states that games must be made commercially available to customers on or before Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. PT. GTA 6 launches on Thursday, November 19, which puts it inside the window with roughly a day to spare.
The news spread quickly on October 15, with Eurogamer, GamesRadar, Kotaku, GameSpot, Insider Gaming and TheGamer all reporting the same FAQ wording. None of this comes from Rockstar Games. It is The Game Awards' own rule, applied to a release date Rockstar confirmed back in May 2025 and repeated with this week's launch trailer.
What The Game Awards FAQ actually says
The FAQ is short on this point, so it is worth being precise about what is and is not in it:
- The eligibility cutoff is November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. Pacific. That is the only release-date rule stated for the main categories.
- The ceremony streams live on Thursday, December 10, 2026, from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
- Winners are decided by a blended vote: the voting jury carries 90 percent and public fan voting carries 10 percent. Fan voting closes on Wednesday, December 9, at 6 p.m. PT.
- The Players' Voice category has its own, later deadline. Games must ship on or before November 30, 2026, to qualify there.
The FAQ does not publish a nominee announcement date and does not say when jury ballots are due. Those two gaps matter, and we come back to them below.
Why the date felt tight
This is not the first time the question has come up. Since Rockstar locked in November 19, fans and some commentators have pointed out that The Game Awards' cutoff usually lands in the third week of November, and that GTA 6 would be cutting it fine either way. TheGamer's write-up lists the recent cutoffs as November 21 in 2025, November 22 in 2024 and November 17 in 2023, so the date genuinely moves around from year to year. In 2023, a November 19 release would have missed the window.
That history fuelled a theory that Geoff Keighley, who produces and hosts the show, would shift the cutoff to make room for GTA 6. Nothing supports that. The 2026 date is a day earlier than 2025's, not later, and The Game Awards has said nothing about any individual game. GameSpot's take, headlined with a plea to put down the pitchforks, argues the game was always going to qualify under the normal pattern. We are treating the "moved for GTA" idea as fan speculation, and it will not appear on our Rumor Tracker as anything else.
Eligible is not the same as nominated
This is the part most headlines skip. Qualifying under the release-date rule only means GTA 6 can be considered. Nominations come from a jury of outlets, each submitting a confidential, unranked ballot. For jurors to nominate a game in good faith, they need to have played it, and at 9 p.m. PT on November 20 the game will have been on sale for a little more than a day.
How that squares with a story Rockstar has described as a long one is an open question. Rockstar has announced no review plan for GTA 6, and there is no official word on early access for press. A single-source claim this week that review copies will go out "very soon" is unverified and sits on our Rumor Tracker. If jurors do get the game early, the timeline works. If they do not, GTA 6 could be eligible on paper and still miss the Game of the Year shortlist simply because too few voters have finished it.
That would be a strange outcome for the biggest release of the generation, and it is exactly the kind of thing The Game Awards would presumably want to avoid. But the FAQ as written does not address it, and until it does, nobody outside the show knows how the jury window will be handled.
What to watch next
Three things would settle this story:
- A nominee announcement date from The Game Awards. In past years nominees have been revealed in the second half of November, after the cutoff, so a date would show how much time jurors get.
- Any statement from Rockstar on reviews or press access for GTA 6. That remains the single biggest unknown for awards season.
- The November 19 launch itself. Take-Two has said the game will ship on time, and the launch trailer repeated the date, but the eligibility margin is one day, so any slip of even a few days would push GTA 6 into The Game Awards 2027.
For now the facts are simple. GTA 6 is eligible for The Game Awards 2026, the ceremony is on December 10, and whether it is nominated depends on a jury process the show has not yet detailed.
