Rockstar still will not give anyone a number. But in its preview session at Rockstar North, co-studio head Rob Nelson described the Grand Theft Auto VI map as "very big" while declining to put a figure on it — a demonstration reported in detail by IGN on August 27.

What we did get is a much clearer picture of what fills that space.

A Map That Actually Looks Like a Map

The pause-screen map is a significant upgrade. Where previous GTA games used a fairly rudimentary Google-Maps-style rendering of blocks and streets, GTA 6 uses satellite imagery.

Each district is populated with buildings and people styled to match the culture of that specific location — the crowd in Little Cuba does not look like the crowd out at Mount Kalaga National Park.

Exploration Is Meant to Be Rewarded

The design principle Rockstar keeps returning to is that missions and events are not limited to map icons.

Random events occur naturally. Rockstar's own example is wonderfully strange: a questionable lawyer sitting in a dumpster who will trade you legal advice for some pills.

Conversations can become activities. Interactions with NPCs can trigger jobs on their own, and even ambient dialogue can spin up an emergent event.

Your partner will suggest things. Jason and Lucia can spontaneously propose a nearby activity or job, so a trip across town can turn into something else entirely if you agree.

Rockstar says it has deliberately blurred the line between open-world and main-mission content, and that the story is designed to reward time spent in the world rather than sprinting mission to mission.

Every Confirmed Activity

The activities named so far:

Rockstar was explicit that this list is not exhaustive.

You Can Study Animals — and Pet Dogs

Lifted straight from Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA 6 lets you study animals at the zoo or out in the wild, checking each new species off a list.

And yes: dogs can be petted. They can also be scolded, if that is who you are — and the Extended Look showed petting one producing a positive marker on your Criminal Profile.

The New Focus System

To help you read a busy world, GTA 6 adds a Focus system that highlights points of interest — useful items to find, and police to avoid.

Even the Ads Are Content

There are more radio and TV advertisements than in any previous GTA. Two Rockstar showed off: an antidepressant called Angstipan, and The Prairie Sandwich, which weighs in at a mere 30,000 calories.

That's the clearest signal that the satire is intact — though Rockstar says it has deliberately avoided leaning on specific political issues, memes or contemporary slang, so the writing doesn't date across a development cycle this long.
