Safehouses in Grand Theft Auto have historically been a bed, a wardrobe and a save point. Grand Theft Auto VI rebuilds them around a different model entirely — Red Dead Redemption 2's camps.

The detail comes from Rockstar's preview session at Rockstar North, where co-studio head Rob Nelson played through an extended section of the game for IGN.

Homes That Other People Use

Jason and Lucia can live in the same safehouse together, each running their own schedules so their behaviour in the world stays believable.

The bigger shift is that these are not private boxes. Like RDR2's camps, other people can come and go — one home shown in the preview belonged to someone other than Jason or Lucia entirely.

Rockstar describes them as more interactive than the equivalent in any previous GTA.

Grooming Without Leaving the House

You can shorten or shave your hair and facial hair at home, again mirroring Red Dead Redemption 2.

There is a limit, and it is a sensible one: new styles still have to be cut at a salon or barber. Home grooming maintains what you have; changing your look properly means going somewhere.

That connects directly to GTA 6's police system, where changing your hair clears the appearance description officers are working from. Being able to trim up at home before a job is a tactical option, not just a cosmetic one.

Your Cars Live Here, and Their Trunks Work

Each character can own multiple personal vehicles, kept at safehouses.

Those cars have working trunks, and you can store a change of clothes and weapons in them.

This is one of the smartest connective threads in the whole design. Because GTA 6's police build a description of what you are wearing as well as what you look like, and because a hat or glasses is not enough to break it, a full spare outfit in your boot is genuinely useful equipment. The customisation system and the wanted system are wired into each other.

Shops Have Exclusive Stock

Hair salons and clothing stores are spread across the open world as usual, but each now carries exclusive items and signature hairstyles.

The intent is obvious — to stop players defaulting to whichever store is nearest and push them to actually explore Leonida to find a specific look.

Your Body Changes Too

Appearance is not only clothes and hair. What Jason and Lucia do physically shows on them:

Each of these can be done solo or as a couple — and doing them together feeds the relationship system, since exercising as a pair is one of the ways Jason and Lucia grow closer.

Rockstar's stated aim, via Rob Nelson, is to allow as much self-expression as possible without losing the essence of the characters. These are still Jason and Lucia; you're shaping them, not replacing them.
