Update, August 27: confirmed. Rockstar has since verified that the six-star wanted level returns in GTA 6, along with a rebuilt police system in which officers must first witness a crime and then build a description of your appearance, clothing and vehicle. The reporting below has held up; see our full breakdown of the new wanted level for the confirmed detail.

The material circulating since August 18 has produced a long list of claimed Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay systems, and a few have dominated the conversation — chief among them a wanted meter that appears to run to six stars.

Before any of it: Rockstar Games has confirmed none of this, and has made no public statement. On top of the usual uncertainty, there is a specific problem with this particular batch. Insider NateTheHate has claimed the footage is over a year old, and multiple outlets describe it as coming from an in-development build. If that's right, then even genuine footage would show systems that may be unfinished, placeholder, or already cut from the game. Read everything below as reported, and provisional even if true.

The Six-Star Claim

Both GTA IV and GTA V capped their wanted systems at five stars. A sixth tier would be the first expansion of that system in well over a decade, which is why this detail has travelled further than any other.

Observers describe a meter with six positions rather than five, and reports note that the escalation appears more granular than in GTA V — one widely repeated example has a violent attack on an NPC drawing only a two-star response rather than immediately spiking. Reporting from TweakTown, PC Gamer and GamesRadar+ all reference the six-star reading.

The honest caveat: a sixth icon in a HUD is not automatically a sixth wanted level. UI elements get misread constantly in low-resolution footage, and a slot in a meter could be a placeholder, a different stat entirely, or an element that never ships. It is a plausible reading of what's on screen, not a confirmed feature.

Stamina in Melee

A second detail with broad agreement across outlets: a stamina or energy meter that depletes during melee combat. Descriptions have it draining as the character throws punches, and emptying entirely during a sustained attack.

If real, that would be a meaningful change to how GTA handles hand-to-hand fighting, which has historically had no endurance cost at all. It would also fit the general direction reports have pointed in — a game with more simulation depth underneath the moment-to-moment action.

Fuel, Maintenance and Trunk Storage

Several vehicle systems have been described:

Fuel in particular is a long-running fan request, which is exactly why it deserves extra scepticism — details that match what people already want to be true spread faster and get scrutinised less.

Police Recognition

Reports also describe a police system that tracks your face, your clothing and your getaway vehicle, with changing any of them able to reduce your wanted level. That would be a substantial step up from GTA V's line-of-sight and search-radius model, and closer to how Red Dead Redemption 2 handled witnesses and disguises.

The Icon Everyone Is Arguing About

A separate detail — an ambiguous icon appearing near the character portrait — has been read by many as confirmation of a Red Dead-style honour or karma system. We looked at that claim on its own, and the short version is that the evidence is thinner than the confidence around it: the icon is consistent with several different systems, and the observation doesn't distinguish between them.

What Is Actually Confirmed

None of the above. What Rockstar has actually confirmed is unchanged:

Take-Two has issued DMCA takedown notices over the circulating material, which many have read as circumstantial evidence of authenticity. It isn't a confirmation, and it says nothing about how old the build is.

Our Read

There is a reasonable chance some of these systems are real. There is also a reasonable chance that a year-old build shows things that no longer exist, and no way to tell which is which from the outside.

Eight days out, that's an argument for patience. On August 27 you get to see the actual game, at full quality, in the state Rockstar intends to ship it — and every one of these claims either gets confirmed or quietly disappears.
