With Rockstar's Extended Look landing on August 27, your timeline is about to fill with clips claiming to be GTA 6 gameplay. Most of them will be fake.
AI video generation has got good enough that a convincing-looking ten-second clip takes minutes to produce, and there is enormous attention to be won right now. Here's how to keep your footing.
Start With the Source, Not the Footage
The single most useful habit: check who posted it before you look at what's in it.
Genuine GTA 6 material comes from a very short list of places — the Rockstar Newswire, Rockstar's official YouTube channel, the official GTA VI website, Rockstar's verified social accounts, and on August 27, Netflix. That's it.
If a clip is only on an anonymous account, a fresh account, or an aggregator with no primary source, the correct default is disbelief. Real Rockstar reveals are not soft-launched through a stranger's repost.
Tells That Give AI Away
AI-generated game footage has recognisable weaknesses. Look for:
- Text that won't hold still. Signage, number plates, HUD elements and shop fronts warp, shimmer or change spelling between frames. Rendered games don't do this.
- Physics that don't persist. Objects deform, vehicles clip through geometry, or damage appears and then heals a moment later.
- No consistent UI. Real gameplay has a stable minimap, weapon wheel and health bar in fixed positions. Fakes often omit the HUD entirely, or it drifts and rescales.
- Suspiciously short and cut oddly. Most fakes run five to fifteen seconds because coherence collapses beyond that. Hard cuts every couple of seconds are a hiding technique.
- Hands, crowds and reflections. Still the classic failure points — fingers merging, background NPCs melting into each other, reflections that don't match the scene.
- Too on-the-nose. If a clip happens to show exactly the most-requested feature the community has been arguing about this week, be sceptical.
"It Got a Takedown" Is Weaker Evidence Than It Looks
You'll see people argue that a copyright takedown proves a clip is real. It's a reasonable signal, but it isn't proof.
A takedown is a legal action, and rights holders issue them against material that misuses their branding regardless of what it actually contains. Treat it as one data point, not a verdict — and note that it tells you nothing about whether footage reflects the finished game, as opposed to an old build.
Watch Out for What Comes After
The bigger practical risk isn't being fooled — it's what fakes are often bait for.
Moments like this reliably produce scam links: "full leaked footage," "the complete map," "early access download." These lead to survey walls, credential-harvesting pages, fake Rockstar Social Club logins, and malware. Rockstar has never distributed anything through a link in a reply.
Two rules that cover almost all of it: never enter your Rockstar or platform login anywhere you arrived at from a social media link, and treat any "GTA 6 download" before November 19 as hostile by definition. The game isn't out. There is nothing to download.

Wait for August 27. Rockstar is about to show you the real thing, on the record, at a time it announced weeks in advance — Netflix at 3 p.m. ET, then YouTube and the official site around 9 p.m. ET.
Anything before that is, at best, someone else's guess.
